How to Sew a Cute Owl Pincushion

Updated: 2 days ago

If you’re looking for a fun, quick, and adorable sewing project, you’re going to love making a cute owl pincushion. This little companion is more than just charming décor for your sewing table—it’s practical, beginner-friendly, and a great way to use up your favorite fabric scraps.

In this tutorial, we’ll walk through each step so you can stitch up your own weighted owl friend to hold your pins, organize your needles, or keep your pattern pieces in place. Get your materials ready, pour a cup of coffee, and let’s dive into this cozy, creative project!

Pincushion Body Front

Sew the body and front together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Sew the other side.

Turn inside out and fold the top down.

Bottom

Set machine to longest stitch length. Sew a straight stitch 1/4" from the edge of the fabric. Sew another straight stitch 1/4" from the first row. Leave plenty of thread tails. Gather the fabric by pulling the bottom threads.

Now it's time to fill. You can use stuffing, walnut shells, rice, or fabric scraps cut to really small pieces. You can use a cup to hold it in place and a small funnel to fill it. Tighten the gather and tie a knot to hold it all in place.

For the base, sew a straight stitch 1/4" from the edge of the fabric. Leave plenty of thread tails. Place the cardboard piece in the middle. Gather the fabric by pulling the bottom threads.

Place the base at the bottom of the owl. Sew a blind stitch to hold it in place.

Finishing Details

Sew on nose and buttons. Enjoy your new pincushion!
